These Puppy Mills are 5 of the 10 dogs currently residing at Help A Hound, Inc. These animals can not be adopted out. They are Puppy Mill survivors that will remain here at Help A Hound, Inc. They would not be here with us today if it were not for all of the tireless, selfless work that a wonderful woman and her partner do in New York to save these dogs from Puppy Mills.
These dogs were used for breeding litter after litter of puppies to be sold in Pet Stores. All of these survivors had infections, tumors, urinary, no spay or neuter (of course), no dental's, all had rotting teeth, no shots, no heartworm testing, no worming issue, etc. They had not had any vetting period not even the most basic check up in the Mill. They were kept in very filthy conditions that caused wounds on their feet, and hips and infections from the urine and feces that was built up in their paws. They had to have all their shots, worming, heartworm, spay and neuter, dental's, blood work and medications. The Vet bills have been extremely expensive. In the case of Mila and Cricket the Vet bills have been on going due to mammary tumors and cancer of the ear drum.
This is Mila Before-
We cut the hair around her face for the picture. The Mill owner had only shaved her around the birthing area and top of the legs.
Mila is a 9 year old Mini Schnauzer, used as a breeder dog at the Mill(mixed with a Westie we think). She is a sweet little girl, her Schnauzer traits are really coming out. (The little Boston Terrier standing next to her is just being a ham, he was a little guy we Fostered)
When she was groomed the hair came off at the skin in one piece she was so terribly matted. Her feet were swollen and infected from standing in feces and urine. She was bred so many times that her teats hung almost to the floor. The Vet said that the tendons were just worn out. All but her left side is almost back to normal now, however; we believe she has mammary tumors in the left side which she has to be seen by the Vet for this week. This is what can happen when they are repeatedly bred and not given even the most basic healthcare. We will keep you updated. She received all vaccinations, wormer, heartworm test, heartworm meds, urine and fecal tests. She received medications to treat all infections, and of course was spayed..
AUGUST 2009 UPDATE-Mila was indeed diagnosed with mammary tumors, fortunately they are not cancerous but were aspirated at the time of the biopsy, she was given antibiotics for infection within the tumors-The vet said the infection is most likely from the biopsy site.
November 2009 UPDATE-Mila has an ulcerated eye which has ruptured and the eye must now be removed. The cost of this surgery is $840.00.
This is Mila today-She is a much different animal in appearance as well as behavior, now she knows how to play and is very social and loving. She is still timid around hands at times. Her mother instinct has not waned at all, she actually allowed our 2.3 pound, 11 day old Mr. Roscoe Cheeks to nurse,(not effectively), but neither of them seemed to mind. Roscoe still shows a special bond with Mila even though he now weighs 52 pounds.
This is Cricket:

Cricket is a 5 year old Yorkshire Terrier. He came from a bad State Shelter that was shut down. He is a great little man. He was recently diagnosed with Cancer of the ear. He had to have surgery to remove the tumor. The Vet believes he got it all, but there are no guarantees. If the tumor comes back he may have to have his ear drum removed. Poor baby. He was pretty sick when we got him. He had ear mites and several infections, ears, mouth, urinary tract and of the intestines, mouth etc. He lost 4 teeth when he had his dental and of course he was neutered. He received all medications for the infections. A real lap baby this little guy.
This is Alfie:

Alfie is an 11 year old tiny 5 pound Pomeranian. She was used as a breeder dog at a Puppy Mill. She is the sweetest little thing. Shy, loves to be held and eat cheese its. She is showing signs of arthritis. She had urine and fecal tests, plus heartworm test. She has no teeth. She lost them all when she had her dental (She only have 4 then). She had a urinary tract infection and an infected mouth. She was under weight and had surgery to be spayed. She also was wormed and treated with all medications needed for the infections.
OCTOBER 2009 UPDATE: My beautiful little Alfie has gone over the Rainbow Bridge-Rest in Peace sweetheart.
This is Shiloh Before:

Shiloh After

Shiloh is an 11 year old Bichon. She was used as a breeder dog at a Puppy Mill. She is extremely shy, hence the name Shiloh, but she has come around about 100% since coming to live here. She received all vaccinations, wormer, heartworm test, heartworm meds, urine and fecal tests. She lost a couple of teeth during her dental. She had a urinary tract infection, an infected mouth from lack of proper food and dental care and her skin was infected. She received medications to treat all infections. She had surgery to be spayed.
Tango is a 10 year old Pomeranian. She was used as a breeder dog at a Puppy Mill. She just rolls with the flow. She isn't the least bit shy and gets along with everyone. She had two large open sores on her back that looked like they might have been from a cage wire or other injury, they were treated with antibiotics. The hair has grown over the scars but the hair parts easily away from them. She lost a couple of teeth during her dental. She had a urinary tract infection and an infected mouth. She had surgery to be spayed. She had urine and fecal tests, plus heartworm test.
